The Xbox Series X has now been out for a whole year, and although stock is low and it can be difficult to get your hands on one, I managed to get mine in summer, and I'm really happy with it, but let's see how the Series X holds up after one year of being released…
My first impressions
The first thing that came to mind when I lifted the xbox out of the box was that damn, this thing is heavy. Obviously it'll be sat on a shelf most of the time so that's kinda irrelevant. The other thing I thought was wow, the design is really nice, it kinda feels and looks like a mini pc, and I like it. When I first switched it on, the setup process was really easy, I just had to sign into my Microsoft account and bam, I was ready to play.
My experience
I love this thing. It's just so good at what it does and I like that. Games load quickly and damn, they look and run so well. I'm used to the Switch, which doesn't have any backwards compatibility at all, but the Xbox Series X has support for not just Xbox one games, but also most Xbox 360 games and even some original Xbox games, which is incredible as it means that you have a huge library of games to play, even in the early days of the console, which is something I really struggled with back when I first got my Switch. Another thing I really love is the customizability of the homescreen, you can choose your own wallpaper which is rad, and you can choose which games are on your homescreen and which are not. I mean, there's a lot I like about this console, but the last amin thing is achievements, I think Nintendo is really missing out with this one, this improves the replayability of any game so much as it creates targets and objectives within a game that you would have never thought to do before, it has definitely got me doing some strange things like dukcing 100 times in one match of Mortal Kombat, which I had a laugh doing.
My nit picks
Storage. My biggest and only complaint about this console is storage. 1TB is just not enough, especially when games like GTA 5, Forza Horizon 5 and Mortal Kombat 11 ultimate are all over 100GB. I've already run out and i'm contemplating if i should get an external hard drive for my xbox one games, as series X games need the SSD. I feel like if they had included 2TB I would have had plenty enough. I'm also not a big fan of the ads on the home screen as this is something I don't have over on my Switch. There are SSD expansions from seagate, but they cost a lot, in fact the new 2TB one cost £50 less than the Series X...
Should you buy it, or save some money and get the Series S?
This is a tough question, and when considering a new gaming console, this might be a question you have. If you already have loads of physical games from older consoles then you should definitely go with the Series X as you won't be able to use physical games on the Series S as it doesn't have a disc drive. But if you are new to games, then you probably don't need the extra power of the Series X, you could just save your money and get a Series S and if you do decide to go for the Series S then you should definitely consider gamepass ultimate as you will get access to so many games including the newly released Forza Horizon 5.
