Hey everyone, I hope you are all having a great day! About a month ago I decided to make the jump back to Android as my daily driver, after 5 years of using an iPhone. I have been slowly converting all of my stuff over, and today I'm going to tell you why, how and for how long!
Why I switched
Up until now, I have been exclusively using Apple devices, mainly because I really like how well Apple’s ecosystem works and how good the designs usually are. Over the past year I’ve tried a few different Android devices from both Samsung and Google and I’ve enjoyed them a lot, with them having a lot more customisation options than my iPhone. The phone that really made me want to switch was the S23 Ultra that I was using earlier this year. It was just superior to my iPhone 14 Pro Max in every way, but I was too afraid to leave that Apple ecosystem so I stuck with my iPhone.
You're probably wondering how I ended up switching, well around July time I started to have lots of overheating issues with my iPhone 14 Pro Max, which made the phone almost unusable. I wasn’t exactly enjoying the phone as it was, with its poor battery performance compared to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro Max, poor heat management in general and its lack of telephoto zoom. So with all the issues I was having with my iPhone I thought screw it and I made the jump to the dark side!
What I replaced my Apple products with…
So first off, I ditched my iPhone 14 Pro Max for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. This has been a very interesting change because this is my first foldable and using it as my everyday phone has taken some adjustment. So far I’m absolutely loving it, and I will talk more on it in my full review.
AirPods who? The least interesting change has to be the AirPods Pro 2 for a pair of galaxy buds2 Pro, they’re both great headphones. I never really had any issues with my AirPods, but I definitely prefer the stemless design on the galaxy buds for comfort. On the other hand I'd say the AirPods edge out the galaxy buds when it comes to active noise cancellation and the new find my features.
I also ditched my AirPods Max after having a few connection issues with them after the new iOS updates. Thankfully the new Sony XM5’s are absolutely amazing and destroy AirPods Max in every single way which is very impressive as they are also £150 cheaper. I use my headphones a lot so this was probably the most important part for me other than the phone itself.
Of course I had to change over to Google Assistant too and ditch my HomePods, which was a lot easier than I initially expected. Because I have all of my lights set up on my Philips Hue Bridge, I was able to just log into my Hue account on the Google Home app and link them all up and shbang! It’s all working with 0 issues!
As expected, switching to an android phone rendered my Apple Watch Ultra completely useless, as there is literally no way possible to use an Apple Watch without an iPhone. So as you can probably guess, I bought a Galaxy Watch 6 Classic to replace it.
Which Apple products I kept…
I've only kept my iPad Pro as I don't care for Android tablets all too much, I like the OLED displays they use but the software isn't optimised to run properly on the big screen. Also the iPads are just unmatched in terms of power, I have the M2 chip model and it's so fast and can pretty much do anything.
How's it going…
So far I’m really enjoying it! There’s just so much more I can do with my devices now. After swicthing I’ve realised how locked in to the Apple ecosystem I really was, and it wasn’t particularly easy to leave it either, but I’m glad I did. I now feel that I have choice with the products I buy, rather than having to get the same brand for everything. And to be honest, the Android ecosystem works insanely well now, its come so far in the last few years and if you use Google apps you can easily slot your iPad right in to your Android ecosystem, and still sync together seamlessly.
I've been having a few issues with notifications not coming through for certain apps which has been frustrating but they seem to fix themselves most of the time. The only thing I really do miss is my Apple Watch, the software is just leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.
Will I ever return to iOS…
That's a question that will be answered in the near future haha.
