MacBook Pro 14", one year later

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Time flies! I can't believe I'm already writing a one year later review for the 14” MacBook Pro! Crazy, I feel like I only got it yesterday but in reality I got it last January, as an upgrade from my MacBook Air. Considering my old laptop was still completely fine, this was most certainly an unnecessary upgrade but in no way shape or form do I regret it, and I'm about to explain why!

Why I upgraded in the first place

Because I am a nerd. As soon as I knew there was a MacBook with a 120Hz refresh rate and a mini led display, that got my attention pretty quickly! Don't get me wrong the display on the M1 MacBook Air was really sharp and an overall really high quality display but it didn't make me go wow, like this one does! It looks sooooooo good. I saw it on demo in some local stores before I upgraded and I instantly fell in love, it's so buttery smooth, the blacks are so deep and the bezels are razor thin. Absolutely gorgeous! I could go on praising the display all day but I'll spare your time since I'm a nice person- mostly. Another reason the 14” appealed to me was the new ports, at the time I was using a HDMI monitor so having a HDMI port on my MacBook was awesome and super convenient, although now I'm using a thunderbolt display so it rarely gets used, but its there if I need it I guess. There were a few other things that persuaded me to make the upgrade but those are the main ones!

The battery life

So the battery life is great! I'd Say this is the only thing that didnt "blow me away" and that's only because I'd already used a MacBook with Apple silicon. I kinda believe that my M1 MacBook Air had better battery life because of it having a less power hungry chip. I say this but it will blow any pre-M1 MacBook out of the water and most other laptops concerning battery life, it's crazy good. Bonus, mine is still at 100% battery capacity which is pretty impressive one year later! So all in all, I've had no battery problems at all over the last year and hopefully that will continue to be the case.

Performance

Well I'm pretty certain that I'm not pushing this computer to its limits or anywhere close so all I can tell you is that I never have to wait, everything loads instantly with no delay whatsoever. All I use it for is writing up documents, and light photo editing and I've never had any issues whatsoever. It boots up crazy quickly, quicker than my brain anyway (not sure if that means anything ). A small, but cool, thing I love about all of the M chip series MacBooks is that when you open them up and the screen is already on before you even fully open the laptop, crazy! I'm still yet to hear my fans spin, starting to wonder if there is actually any in there or if Apple are just having me on! Jokes aside, its never got hot and I genuinely haven't heard my fans spin yet.

How long I intend to keep it for

So before this I had an M1 MacBook Air which obviously I didn't have for that long, but that was a taster to see how good the new M1 chip was, and I was impressed, and that why I went all out and bought this, and I have every intention to keep it for a fair few years. Before the M series Macs, I didn't really care for Mac's that much, I found that my iPad was just easier to use and more efficient in some cases. At least until Apple releases something more exciting with upgrades that I'll be able to take advantage of with what I use it for. And with the recent release of the M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pros, it's starting to look like i'll be waiting a while before I ditch my beloved 14" MacBook Pro.

Thanks for reading everyone! Overall I still love my 14” MacBook Pro and have no intentions of upgrading anytime soon, the 120 Hz, mini led and extra ports have all been a pleasure to use!
