Hi everyone, today I have the review you've all been waiting for! Is the iPhone 14 pro worth the hype? let's find out!
What's new?
So with the iPhone 14 series, Apple is continuing to further differentiate the regular iPhone from the Pro. From dynamic island to the always on display to the ground breaking 48MP camera, Apple is not playing around this year. So let's go over everything that you need to know about the new iPhone 14 Pro…
The island life
This year we got a brand new way to interact with your iPhone, Apple’s calling it dynamic island. Since the iPhone X, us iPhone users have had to deal with a niche at the top of the display to house the selfie camera and true depth sensor which I'm ok with, I personally think the trade for face ID is worth it. But this year Apple changed it. We now have a pill cut out that is now technically a feature of the phone. As you can see in my examples below, the dynamic island adapts and shows information from different apps, you can even tap on it to launch the app in question or hold and press to show a preview which I think is super cool and something I have been using a lot. It will also be interesting so see how third party apps make use of it over the next few months.
The always on display
So there's been a lot of heat about Apple's implementation of the always on display, I have been pretty 50/50 about it but I think I'm going to leave it on for now. all it does is dim your lock screen and go down to a 1Hz refresh rate so it doesn't eat up all of your battery life. It kind reminds me of the Apple Watch and it is starting to slowly grow on me, although it would be nice if Apple would let us customise it a bit more through software.
Battery life
So this is a grey area of the 14 Pro series. The always on display definitely affects battery life, just not as much as some people are making out, I'd say the battery life is very similar to last year's iPhones, the 14 Pro easily gets me through the day with heavy usage and the always on display, unlike previous iPhones like the 12 Pro. Obviously if you want the best battery life, then get the max or the plus but I'm sure the Pro will last long enough fro most people, even if your using the always on display.
Performance
A16 bionic is here. Ok so I'm just gonna say it, in terms of everyday usage, there is no noticeable difference compared to the A15, but if you're upgrading from an older iPhone then you will not be disappointed at all. Personally, on day to day usage I haven't noticed anything different performance wise but it may come into play later down the line if you plan on keeping your phone for longer.
Purple
The main reason to upgrade, obviously. I was very set on a purple iPhone Pro this year, especially because it had been in the rumour mill for a while! Some people said it would never happen, but here we are… deep purple baby! I'm so happy with the shade of this purple and it's definitely a better colour than last year's special colour, sierra blue.
Camera
As you probably know the new 48mp sensor is finally here alongside many other small improvements when compared to last years iPhone 13 Pro. From my testing I've found the camera to be awesome (as expected) but I'll let you be the judge, feel free to head over to my instagram to see a hand full of samples shot on iPhone 14 Pro in the highlights.
Shout out to my glamorous assistant for helping put the 14 pro cameras in action :D
My experience
Coming from the iPhone 13 Pro max, this was definitely a step down in battery life but a step up in every other way. I much prefer the smaller form factor for one handed usage and the fact that it easily fits in all of my pockets no stress. I'm really enjoying the dynamic island too, it just feel refreshing to use and works perfectly with the rest of the UI. The always on display is also slowly growing on me...
Conclusion
I think the iPhone 14 Pro is an awesome phone and if you need an upgrade from an older phone then you won't be disappointed. Do you need to sell your one year old iPhone 13 Pro? Probably not. The 14 Pro is awesome, Apple has done a great job but if you have an iPhone 12 or 13 and you're happy with your phone then maybe it would be worth waiting it out for next year. But with that said I’ve really enjoyed my first month with the iPhone 14 Pro and I would recommend it to anyone who's looking to upgrade to a newer iPhone!
Thanks for reading my beautiful people! Catch y'all next time!
