On October 26th 2020 I bought my iPhone 12 Pro, upgrading from the iPhone 11 Pro Max, and here are my thoughts (almost) one year later just before I upgrade to the new iPhone…
The iPhone 12 was the year of a redesign, with a new flat edge design similar to the iPhone 4. I personally love the new design, I definatly prefer it to the older design found on the iPhone 11 series. This time round I went for the 6.1” iPhone 12 Pro because I wanted something that was comfortable to hold and that would fit in my pocket, which the 12 Pro defiantly does and my 11 pro max does not. the 12 series also features the A14 Bionic so all iPhone 12's will get many years of software support in the future, but this reviews focus is more about the experience rather than the specs, although I did quickly want to mention how fat the phone actually is.
The pros
Although many people say they can’t tell the difference between the 4GB and 6GB of ram, I defiantly can, apps used to close and refresh way more often on my 11 pro than they do on the 12 pro. My favourite part of this phone is probably the camera, its amazing. I don’t own an actual camera, so the camera is very important to me, all my content is taken on my phone. The portrait mode is very similar to last year, the main difference is that night mode is now on every lens, which is awesome, so now you can get those night time landscape shots. Another feature that I love on the iPhone 12 series is MagSafe which I’ve been using a lot recently with the new MagSafe battery pack, the MagSafe wallet and the MagSafe charging puck and I think its amazing, it all works really well and convenience is key.
The cons
Some of the cons I’m about to discuss may not apply to you! It all depends on the phone you currently use now. Personally I’ve found the battery life to be poor on this phone compared to my prior iPhone 11 pro max which was the battery king, and yes when I bought a smaller iPhone I knew the battery life wouldn’t be as good , but I wasn’t expecting as big of a drop as I got. But having said that, if your coming from on older iPhone like the iPhone 7, or even something more recent like the iPhone XS then the battery will be a good upgrade from your previous phone, but if you have one of the bigger iPhones like the XS max then you should expect a hit in battery (unless you have a really low battery capacity) and if your not prepared to have a less battery life, then this isn’t the phone for you, you should be looking at the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Why I’m upgrading…
Originally my thinking was that if I get a smaller phone yes I will miss out on the bigger screen and bigger battery but at least I will be able to comfortably use my phone and it will easily fit in any of my pockets, but in reality I really miss the bigger screen and battery and the big size being slightly uncomfortable is a small price to pay. After my experience with the iPhone 12 Pro I will never get a small phone agin, once you’ve gone big, unless you really don’t like it then its really hard to back. So I am returning to a max size phone as soon as the iPhone 13 comes out, and I’m super excited to do so! I really miss having a screen so big that I can just pull out from my pocket!
Should you buy the iPhone 12 when the 13 comes out?
Disregarding my personal experience, and talking about the whole iPhone 12 lineup, yes the iPhone 12 series will be a valid option when the 13 series launches as you will be able to get good discounts and as there are not that many changes coming to this years iPhone, the 12 series should still feel like a new and relevant phone. But like what I always say when buying used or refurbished tech, not just phones, make sure you're buying form a trusted seller, wether it's a shop or someone on a site such as eBay. The place I recommend for used phones and tech in the UK is CEX as they have amazing customer service, you can go in the shop and look at what your about to buy before you buy it, and you get 2 years warranty, which is amazing, and then for refurbished I recommend Apple as their refurbished products are just like new and you know what your going to get, they usually replace a lot of the phone so you will get a new battery etc. I hope this review helped you make a decision or that it was an interesting read for you!
