The Apple Watch Series 7 released last month, and with a few changes when compared to the series 6, it is still a really good smart watch. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now so it is time to put the Series 7 to the test, is it time to upgrade?
First of all, the 41mm size starts at £369 for the GPS variant and £469 fro the cellular variant, where as the 45mm starts at £399 fro the GPS variant and £499 for the cellular variant. But note that if you want a different strap the price may go up, for example, if you opt for the leather link then you will have to pay more as that is a more expensive band. Also these prices are for the aluminium cases, if you want something more premium like stainless steel, then you will also have to pay more.
What’s new?
So the main new feature of the Apple Watch Series 7 is the all new display. I would say that functionally this is a good upgrade especially compared to Apple Watch upgrades in previous years, as the bigger display does allow for more content to be displayed on the screen at once. According to Apple the screen is 20% larger than the Series 6 which does actually sound pretty significant when you put it that way. You can also see the screen from the side of the watch, obviously this doesn’t improve the user experience but it’s certainly satisfying. The new screen is taken advantage of with the 2 new watch faces, contour and modular duo which are both great watch faces, the contour one is all about aesthetics and then the modular duo is about functionality which is great! The watch is also supposed to have increased durability against cracks and scratches which is for sure a welcome addition. You may also notice that on the side of the watch there is only one speaker grill rather than two, for me it sounds pretty much the same, as the only sounds the watch makes are for notifications, but never the less, it’s a change.
Battery life and charging
There isn’t much to say about battery life in all honesty, it is good, but it’s pretty much the same as previous years. Apple still rates it at the same 18 hours of battery life which is ok if your like me and you charge it every night, but if not you may see your watch die on day 2 if you forget to charge it, honestly I hope Apple improves battery life soon, especially with the sleep tracking features, we need better battery life. But although the battery life is meh, the charging speed is certainly not the same case, the watch can charge seriously quickly now, in about 45 minutes you can get around 80%, which is a crazy upgrade from last year. For a full comparison of the charging speed make sure you go and check out AppleWatchDave’s charging comparison reel on Instagram, you can find it with the link down below. The down side is that you will need to purchase a 20W power adapter from Apple to take advantage of this, but a fast charging usb c cable is included in the box.

The keyboard
This is something cool. So now that the watch screen is physically bigger, Apple are now able to put a full keyboard on the watch! I absolutely love this feature, I have the 45mm size so I’m not sure what it’s like on the 41mm but typing is actually surprisingly pleasant, it’s easy and quick, better than scribble and it gets the job done. This is probably one of the biggest advantages of having the bigger screen as this wouldn’t have been comfortable on the older smaller screen sizes.
Should you upgrade?
I would say that if you have an Apple Watch series 5 or 6 then it’s probably not worth upgrading as they are still very recent watches, but if you are rocking a series 4 or older then it may be worth the upgrade, as those watches are fairly older now and there is enough new features to warrant an upgrade. But sometimes your decision to upgrade or not can an depend on how happy you are with what you have now, so I would recommend thinking about the cons for your current watch and seeing if any of the cons have been fixed on the Series 7, for example if you thought the screen was too small, then you won’t be disappointed with the Series 7 and it may be worth the upgrade.
My personal experience
Personally, I’ve fallen in love with the series 7. I really dig the new design with the larger screen, and I love that it bleeds over the display, it gives it a futuristic feel. I’m also really into the new watch faces, I think they are very minimalism and fit perfectly with the watch. Although its not a huge upgrade over my 6 I'm really enjoying it!
Conclusion
Overall, I think this is one of the biggest upgrades we have had since the Series 4, so I would say that if you have the Series 4 or older then this is a worthy upgrade for you and you should enjoy the new additions. If you’re on a Series 5 and you’re not content with it, because of low battery health or maybe something else then you should also go for it, you will love the Series 7.
